Halloween

In early August American stores became full of Halloween stuff. In September, people started to decorated their houses, colorful pumpkins appeared in Brookhart halls.

I knew Americans are excited about Halloween but I didn’t expect that it would be so big. We celebrated Halloween two weekends in a row, for each weekend I needed to find a costume. I can’t say my look was very original, the first costume was a black cat and the second was Lara Croft. To be fair, making these costumes was not difficult but I enjoyed the time I was preparing them. Halloween in Russia is not a very big deal. The old generation believes that Halloween does not mean anything for Russian culture, and they are right. But the young generation tries to find new occasions for parties. So, I was a Soviet Soldier last year as we had Soviet theme last Halloween in my domestic university.

I really enjoyed Halloween here. I like the way people become so crazy, they buy decorations, sew costumes, prepare candies, etc.
And, of course, the next day after Halloween, I noticed Christmas decorations on the Brookhart doors. So, maybe the sense of red-letter day, in a nutshell, is just the pleasure of waiting for it?

  1. Halloween is definitely a big deal here in America. I've known families who throw expensive, elaborate Halloween parties and they go all out for the occasion. For other people it's the dressing up that gets them excited. However, I cannot wait for Christmas. It's both my husband's and my favorite time of the year.

  2. Honestly, we probably are way too extra when it comes to Halloween. I remember getting so excited to trick-or-treat when I was little, then I went through an awkward phase where we didn't really have occasions because we were too old to tirck-or-treat, but too young for the actual Halloween parties, but then college changed the game. Everyone goes all out in college and it is a blast. We have so much to do when Halloween rolls around and I started thinking about my costume in like August. No shame.

  3. My first time dressing up for Halloween was here at ONU my freshmen year. It was after the football game when my friend and I decided we would go out. We had to come up with a last minute costume idea just a couple hours before the party. We went as the ninjas from G.I. Joe. Halloween definitely seems to be a big deal here in Ada. This year I had friends with multiple costumes because they just couldn't pick one. I must say, Halloween at ONU is fun to watch.

  5. I'm so glad you had a great Halloween experience! It is one of the few times each year that the ONU community goes all out, and students have so much fun together. I'm more dedicated to dressing up now than I was in my childhood! Stay spooky!
